Let’s Celebrate Womanhood… Happy International Women’s Day!

Years ago, when Shahnaz Husain launched her eponymous brand and Vandana Luthra started VLCC, they had to work hard to get their concepts and brands across markets.

In recent years, brands like Forest Essentials by Mira Kulkarni and high end luxurious Ayurveda brand and Biotique by Vinita Jain have made a mark in this space.

With rising incomes and affordability, small brands are vying for market attention too.

Beauty in India now has many addresses. A large part of the population is spending on beauty and healthcare. With so many cosmetics brand flooding India and beauty marketplaces like Nykaa making them super accessible, the industry seems to be booming.

March 8 marks International Women’s Day. It provides a chance to reflect on the struggle for greater gender equality and supporting women to reach greater heights.

The roots of this annual event reach back more than a century, yet its focus on respect and opportunities for women remains strikingly relevant today. From sexual harassment and violence to unequal laws and unfairness in the workplace, where women are too often underemployed, underpaid, and underpromoted.

Unequal or unfair treatment can marginalise women and hinder their participation as productive individuals contributing to society and the economy in invaluable ways. Yet when we consider the rich tapestry of organisations and individuals who can make a difference to ensure women have equal opportunities, we also see a crucial role for policymakers.

They can use their positions to design policies that help women and girls access what they need for a fulfilling life—including education, health services, safe transportation, legal protection against harassment, finance, and flexible working arrangements.

In 2020 and 2021, countries with women leaders (such as New Zealand, Germany and Bangladesh) received global praise for their effective handling of the covid 19 pandemic.

Kamla Harris broke a glass ceiling and became the first female, Black, and South Asian American Vice President of the United States.

Scotland became the first country to allow free and universal access to menstrual products.

In 2021, women are facing new challenges at work as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Understanding some of the challenges faced by women around the world is an important step in advocating for gender equality.

Sometimes, simple words of encouragement and love can go a long way in lifting someone up and inspiring them to keep going.
